Canadian Studies at PSU

Located in the economic and cultural heart of Oregon, Portland State University is the largest and most diverse university in the state, currently serving more than 24,000 students. Portland State University offers more than 100 undergraduate, master's, and doctoral degrees, as well as graduate certificates and continuing education programs. P.S.U. serves more students and confers more master's degrees annually than any other Oregon university. Portland State University is considered the leading Oregon higher educational institution for the study of Canada, and now offers a program of study leading to a Certificate in Canadian Studies.

The Significance of PSU's Canadian Studies Program

The U.S.- Canadian trade relationship is the largest of any two nations in the world. Canada is the single largest oil supplier to the United States, as it exports 400,000 barrels a day more than the second largest provider, Saudi Arabia.

In addition to the extensive 3,987 mile border (5,525 miles including the Canadian border with Alaska), the two nations share a common environment and a common language. Cooperation is essential to the management of fisheries, watersheds, and other resources. Yet despite a common language and Canada's importance and proximity, there is a surprising, even pervasive lack of awareness in the United States about Canada, its political system, society, and geography.

PSU's Canadian Studies Program works to raise the profile and deepen comprehension of Canadian economic, social and political issues in the United States, to educate PSU students and the surrounding community about our neighbor to the North, to bring Canadian scholars and speakers to the US, and to provide US scholars opportunities to study in Canada.
