Opportunities for International Faculty Participation
PSU offers several
different modes for faculty members to internationalize teaching and
research. Among them are:
- Teaching / Researching overseas (Fulbright)
- Directing departmental programs overseas (do
we have this)
- Initiating short-term faculty exchanges (example)
- Participating on quarter-long faculty exchanges
(example)
- Team-teaching (example)
- Developing project-based joint teaching with
overseas partners
- Offering joint video or internet courses with
faculty overseas
- Undertaking exploratory travel to set up a future
program
- Attending International Conferences, symposia
- Supervising / Utilizing visiting scholars and
international students in the classroom
PSU draws a distinction
between programs and exchanges when it comes to study, research and
teach abroad programs.
Programs are unilateral activities that usually
involve a group of students and a PSU faculty member. There are two
types of programs: Discipline-based (Departmental) and Consortial.
- Discipline-based, or "departmental"
programs, are sponsored by a PSU department and led by a home university
faculty member. They generally consist of a faculty member taking
a group of students to study discipline-based materials in a foreign
country. There are several different kinds of discipline-based programs.
- Intensive language programs (Romance Languages
& Literature in France)
- Field Study/Research (Archaeology in Suriname)
- City as Classroom (example)
- Collaboration with Partner Institution (example)
- Professional Grand Tour: (example)
- Home campus / overseas site split (example)
- Team-taught cyber courses - no travel, but
collaboration with students and faculty overseas (example)
For more information on how to get involved
with and/or create these Discipline-based (Departmental) Programs,
please see our Departmental Planning Guide for International Programs.
-
Consortial Programs are usually coordinated
by an administrative agent on behalf of a number of universities.
PSU has consortial agreements with the following associations:
- Council for International Educational Exchange
[CIEE]
- Northwest Council of Study Abroad [NCSA]
Exchanges are partnerships that PSU has with institutions
around the world. They are reciprocal in nature and are classified
into two main categories: Bilateral and Multilateral.
- Bilateral Exchanges consist of students and faculty
participating on joint research projects with a selected partner institution
(Example:)
- Multilateral Exchanges: consist of forming or
joining a network of universities, usually focused within one discipline
( Example)
With its programs and exchanges, PSU offers hundreds
of unique ways for faculty members to "internationalize" themselves,
to orient their perspectives to today's increasingly global world. If
you are a faculty member who is interested in embarking on one of our
international experiences, please refer to the Link to Partner Institutions
(Link) for more information on the different programs and exchanges
that the UW offers. Additionally, please contact our Education Abroad
Director Ron Witczak for additional information regarding participation
on existing or creation of new teaching and research opportunities.
