Canada's grand hotels / produced by Lynx Images, Inc. in association with History Television and the Saskatchewan Communications Network. 2001 (VHS; 70 min) This feature documentary celebrates the magnificent history of Canada's grand hotels, buildings that are among the country's most recognized and storied landmarks. Chronicles the hotels' evolution from the creation of the first luxury resort in the wilderness at the Banff Springs in 1888, through their golden era, when the hotels were at the heart of emerging cities across the country.

Borderline Medicine [videorecording]
Comparing U.S. and Canadian health care / [presented by] Filmakers Library, Inc. 1990 (VHS; 58 min) Presents an objective comparison of fundamental differences in the management, operation and funding of the American and Canadian health care systems from the viewpoint of both health policy experts and patients. Features profiles of American and Canadian patients with similar medical problems but vastly different experiences with their health care systems.

Imperfect Union [videorecording]
Canadian labour and the left, part one 1890-1929 / Bloomington, Indiana, Audio Visual Center ; National Film Board of Canada. 1989 (4 videocassettes; 220 min.) Part 1 looks at the problematic relationship of Canadian unions and the New Democratic Party on the eve of the 1980's, as the Socialist International meets in Vancouver. This triggers a flashback to the Industrial Revolution in Great Britain, and the birth of both modern trade unions and democratic socialism. -- In part 2, the world plunges into the Great Depression which, like most leaders, Canada's R.B. Bennett refuses to combat with unbalanced budgets and government spending - as prescribed by John Maynard Keynes, and practised by the Swedish Social Democrats and Roosevelt's New Deal administration in the U.S. -- In part 3, World War II turns Canada into an industrial power, and creates a mass trade union movement. Mackenzie King response with unemployment insurance and full legal status for unions. In 1944, the CCF comes to power in Saskatchewan, under Tommy Douglas: the first socialist government in North America. -- Part 4 follows the rollercoaster of NDP fortunes under its first three leaders: Tommy Douglas, David Lewis, and Edward Broadbent. In spite of the rise of big public sector unions, labour support proves less substantial than the NDP's founders had hoped. The negative public image of unions reflects on the party. The NDP remains shut out of Quebec, but governs three provinces and briefly holds the balance of power federally.

Follows Joachim Obst's quest to find the breeding grounds of a near extinct bird, the Eskimo curlew, in an area of the Northwest Territories that is being opened up to mineral development. Explores the complex changes facing the North and makes a case for planned conservation of the area.

A story about the health consequences of two cultures, the Copper Inuit of Canada's Coronation Gulf and Victoria Island and the Americans and British who moved into the area in the early 1900's, coming to live together in the same place.

Apak Angilirq. 1 videodisc (161 min.). Set amongst the Inuit people of the arctic, the film is a thrilling, passionate story exploring the universal themes of love, revenge and survival. When a small, nomadic community is cursed by an unknown shaman, the curse is still felt years later. Atanarjuat falls in love with Atuat, a woman already promised to the son of the clan's leader. In a fight, she is won by Atanarjuat causing vengeful clan leader Oki to plot to attack Atanarjuat and his brother in their sleep. Atanarjuat manages to escape and sets off running across the ice, embarking on a harrowing adventure to survive in the brutal wilderness. His journey ends when he returns, stronger and wiser, to reclaim his life and stop the curse that has divided his people.
